About This Call

The Adams County Visual Arts Commission (ACVAC) is conducting a competition to select an artist to create and place a single permanent monumental sculpture in the entrance lobby of the Adams County Government Center located at 4430 South Adams County Parkway in Brighton, Colorado. The lobby is a two-story open area approximately 75' x 35' x 20' with entrance doors and a glass wall facing west, an upward curving natural wood wall feature on the south wall, a reception desk on the north, and two elevators on the east wall with large portrait oil paintings above them. The specific location for the sculpture is a space approximately 12' x 12' near the glass outer wall on the west side.

This competition is open to all artists working in three-dimensional mediums willing to provide an original sculptural piece in permanent medium (no water features). The artist must guarantee that no substantially similar work has been or will be placed within 100 miles of the Adams County Government Center. The ACVAC's mission is to place public art that reflects the county and its people. The Government Center's construction theme is "The Sophisticated Prairie," recognizing the county's agricultural heritage. The ACVAC seeks a piece that reflects both this heritage and the county's current commercial and population growth. The Entrance Lobby Sculpture will be the sixth major art project funded by ACVAC at the Government Center.

The artist's budget is $120,000, which includes design, fabrication, preparation, transportation, delivery, installation, site preparation, permits, liability insurance, Worker's Compensation insurance, project documentation, travel expenses, and all other associated costs. The selected work must include an appropriate plaque listing the artist's name, work title, County Commissioners and ACVAC members' names, and acknowledgement of funding support from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District with the SCFD logo. Evaluation criteria include quality and relevance of past work examples, artist qualifications, quality of the specific proposal, appropriateness to the site and project intent, innovation and timelessness, and probability of successful and timely completion. The timeline includes preliminary review until August 5, 2013, finalist notification on August 6, 2013, maquette/model submission by September 23, 2013, interviews and final review until October 24, 2013, selected artist notification on October 25, 2013, and installation completion by March 3, 2014. Finalists will receive a $500 honorarium and may be interviewed by the ACVAC. The selected artist will be required to enter into a contract with the ACVAC and Board of County Commissioners outlining payment and installation schedules, including penalties for failure to meet deadlines.
