Activating the Cultural Landscape

This is a call for site-specific sculptures or high-resolution images of up to two sculptures for outdoor installation on a 100-acre property in Massachusetts. The site features a medium-height elongated industrial classical building with a sweeping manicured landscape, open space, a pond with sitting area, walking trails, and various garden beds. Sculptures will be located in beds abutting the main building and other on-site locations.

Selected artists will receive a $700–$800 stipend per sculpture. Selection will be based on quality, visual design, and experience of place in relationship to the architecture and landscape. Artists are encouraged to submit work with strong color or bright metal. Sculptures must be large scale with the ability to be well anchored to a steel platform or in the ground. All media must be safe for viewers, suitable for outdoor installation, and appropriate for extended outdoor exhibition and weather exposure. Sharp and pointed pieces should be avoided below 4 feet to prevent injury to viewers. Sculptures must have been produced within the last four years and must be the property of the artist.

Artists are responsible for transporting, installing, and removing their work with limited volunteer assistance. Heavy-duty machinery for unloading and setup will be available on a limited scheduled basis. Once installed, sculptures must remain throughout the exhibition period. Work samples should include 3–9 images and 0–3 videos (3–12 total samples). Submission deadline is April 22, 2019. Artists will be notified May 10, 2019, with acceptance confirmation by May 13, 2019. Installation is scheduled for May 26–June 1, 2019, with opening day on June 3, 2019. Artists retain copyright with the exception that the presenter and its agents may reproduce images for marketing and reports.
