About This Call
Accelerate is a national competition for artists ages 16-25 living in the United States who have a physical, cognitive, mental, or sensory disability. The competition invites artists to submit work exploring how art propels their success and provides freedom of expression, and how disability shapes their creative process.
Prizes include a Grand Prize of $20,000, First Award of $10,000, Second Award of $6,000, and 12 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each. There is no entry fee. Eligible media include paintings, drawings, fine art prints, photography, computer-generated prints, digital art, and time-based media with a visual component. Two-dimensional artwork should not exceed 60 inches in either direction; sculpture should not exceed 24 inches in any direction. Submissions must be original work completed within the last three years and after the onset of disability. Previous award recipients are not eligible. Work containing religious or political themes, inappropriate language, or excessive nudity will not be accepted.
Applicants must submit four separate works of art as JPEG images through the CaFE online submission system. An artist's narrative (no more than 2,500 characters) and personal statement responding to the exhibition theme (no more than 350 characters) are required, along with a headshot photograph. For video, film, or audio components, supplemental materials may be submitted on CD or DVD, postmarked by the deadline. A panel of distinguished practicing artists and arts administrators will review submissions based on the development of original ideas, imagination, competence, and skillful use of materials. For assistance with the application, contact Jennifer Wexler at (202) 628-2800, ext. 3885, or [email protected].
