Abstract, Sur-real

This exhibition explores the multifaceted nature of portraiture through lenses of abstraction, surrealism, realism, and spatial depth. The show seeks to answer questions about what defines a portrait: Is it possible for a portrait to be abstract? Can abstraction obscure recognizable features? What about the surreal, the real, and the interplay with three-dimensional space? Spanning the evolution of photography, the exhibition will juxtapose diverse works and engage in dialogue with work by curators Franck Godefroy and Joliet Morrill. While traditional photographs will be displayed, the focus extends beyond two-dimensional prints to include photographs that transcend boundaries and incorporate mixed media, though mixed media prints are not required.

The call invites submissions from across the spectrum, welcoming striking portraits brimming with emotion, enigmatic photographs that challenge viewers to discern their subjects, and portraits that push the boundaries of human form with surreal elements. Submissions are open to all photographers; NOPA membership is not required and all ages are accepted. Works submitted must be legal and the artist assumes responsibility for having the legal right to exhibit and sell the images. Fine arts nudes and implied nude works are acceptable. This exhibition will include work that has been digitally manipulated.

Entry fee is $30 for non-members or $20 for NOPA members. Maximum of 5 pieces per entry. Files must be in JPG format with a maximum file size of 5 MB, resized to 1800px on the short dimension. The exhibition opens November 16, 2025 and remains on view through January 14, 2026. Artists will be notified of acceptance on September 27, 2024. All work must be delivered framed and ready to hang no later than November 11, 2025.
