Abandoned: Images of What Remains

The Arts Council of Lake Oswego invites artists to submit up to three works featuring images of abandoned places or structures found within the Pacific Northwest. Works will be curated into an exhibition on view September 3rd through October 29th, 2021.

The Pacific Northwest has a unique history marked by Indigenous Peoples, early frontier days, the Oregon Trail, and boom and bust industries like trapping and mining. The landscape is dotted with abandoned human-made places and structures that were once thriving, including gold rush ghost towns, shipwrecks, empty farmhouses, abandoned roads, and ghost forests. This exhibition will bring together images in any medium of the "abandoned," interpreted as buildings, structures, or locations no longer occupied or used as originally intended. Decommissioned lighthouses, forts, abandoned cars, and fire towers also qualify. Locations must be within the Pacific Northwest, which includes Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Northern California. The Arts Council does not condone trespassing on private property; artists should obtain proper permissions when necessary.

Eligibility: Open to all artists in all media. Works must fit through the gallery door and be ready for exhibition upon arrival (framed with wire for hanging, or if 3D, with a base or mount). Accepted artists are required to become a Friend of the Arts Council ($50 fee). Submissions should include no more than three works with photos in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format, brief descriptions, title, location, date of creation, medium, dimensions, price (noting the 30% gallery fee), artist statement, and contact information. Email applications as a single PDF to [email protected] with subject line "Call for Art- Abandoned." Deadline: July 9th, 2021. Artists will be notified of acceptance by August 2nd, 2021, with artwork delivery required by August 20th, 2021. Entry is free. Accepted work will be exhibited in ARTspace gallery, open Tuesdays through Fridays, 10am to 5pm. Artists are asked to offer works for sale with the Arts Council taking a 30% commission.
