A Sense of Place 2025

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art announces the 2025 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place, now in its 43rd year. Open to all US artists age 18 and older, this national competition seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists. The exhibition runs September 5–October 10, 2025, at GHIA in Augusta, Georgia.

Eligible media include painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, fabric art, and photography. All works must be original, not previously exhibited at GHIA, and completed on or after January 1, 2022. Each entry requires 1–3 images and costs $35. 2D artworks must not exceed 3 feet in width or 7 feet in height (framed); works on paper should be framed under Plexiglas. 3D artworks must not exceed 4 feet in any direction or weigh more than 70 pounds. All accepted work must be installation-ready with appropriate hanging hardware or mounting. Accepted work cannot be withdrawn before the exhibition closes and no substitutions are permitted.

Three cash prizes will be awarded: a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror's Awards. Additional noncash Merit awards may be presented at the juror's discretion. The juror is Marshall N. Price, Chief Curator and Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Award recipients will be announced September 5, 2025, at the opening reception. The entry deadline is June 30, 2025. Notification letters will be sent July 28, with a delivery deadline for accepted works on or before August 20. Return shipping must be prepaid through FedEx or UPS with a prepaid label enclosed.
