A Sense of Place

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art announces its 2016 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place. Open to participants from throughout the United States, this thirty-sixth annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists.

The competition is open to all US artists age 18 and older. All works must be original, not previously exhibited at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, and completed on or after June 1, 2014. Accepted media include painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. Film and video pieces are ineligible. Two-dimensional work must not exceed three feet in width or seven feet in height and must be framed and ready to hang (works on paper must be under Plexiglas, no glass). Three-dimensional work must not exceed seven feet in any direction or weigh more than 150 pounds. Work requiring ceiling suspension is not accepted.

Entry fee is $35, which allows submission of up to three works; additional works may be submitted at $10 each. Submissions must include 3-10 images. Three cash prizes will be awarded: a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror's Awards. Additional noncash Honorable Mention awards may be presented at the juror's discretion. The juror is Michael Rooks, Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Award recipients will be announced Friday, September 9, 2016, at the opening reception. The exhibition runs September 9 - October 14, 2016. All accepted work must be delivered by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016. Artists are responsible for delivery and return shipping costs. A 35% gallery commission will be charged on all sales.
