About This Call
A New View Camden is a Request for Proposals from the City of Camden, New Jersey, awarded a Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge grant. The project invites artists to use materials, spaces and time in a transformative way to reinforce the perception of the city as a place of creative possibility, on sites that were previously associated with illegal dumping. Artists are invited to propose designs, fabrication, installation and removal of artwork to be created at a scale commensurate with outdoor sites. The work will be visible to pedestrians, cyclists, automobile drivers, and public transit users. Fabrication may potentially engage residents using Camden and area facilities.
Eligibility is open to all visual and performing artists, age 18 and over, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Local artists are encouraged to apply. Artist teams are eligible, including teams from multiple disciplines. Selected artists must demonstrate professional artistic experience and the ability to undertake design, creation and installation within the established time frame. Experience with meaningful community engagement in the creation, fabrication and/or interpretation of artwork is preferred. The work must withstand outdoor weather conditions for up to six months and conform with established safety norms while allowing for public interaction.
Selected artwork must be installed by May 30, 2020 and removed by October 31, 2020. Budget proposals for each site may not exceed $100,000 and should include artist's honorarium, fabrication, materials, shipping, travel and lodging expenses, incidental expenses, and community engagement. The work is intended to be temporary. Artists own their work and may keep or dispose of it after the project ends on October 31, 2020, though the City of Camden and its partners have first right of refusal for purchase. Work sample requirements: 10 images and up to 1 video.
