About This Call
The City of Pompano Beach Fire Department has acquired a piece of steel from the World Trade Center for use in a memorial for the 343 first responders who died on September 11, 2001. The City is commissioning an artist to integrate this steel into a memorial based on a design concept provided by the City, with some artistic freedom permitted while maintaining the overall design integrity.
The artist must fabricate a memorial with a strong presence reflecting a somber state of remembrance. Visitors must be able to touch the exposed steel and connect with the tragic loss. The artifact must be displayed as part of a greater memorial, not as a trophy. The numbers "343" must appear on the memorial, and the names of first responders and their battalion must be listed in alphabetical order. If the artifact is cut, drilled, or altered, any shavings or detached portions must be returned to the 9-11 Foundation or proof of respectful and permanent disposal must be provided.
The monument height cannot exceed 8 feet. The base must be 5' x 5' with a minimum height of 6 inches, designed to prevent water pooling. Four lights must be placed on the monument, one reflecting on each face of each tower. The artwork must be durable with minimal maintenance, resistant to rust and fading, and capable of withstanding high-speed winds in compliance with the Florida Building Code. The memorial will be located at Founders Park, 215 NE 4th Avenue, Pompano Beach, Florida, next to the Historic Fire House. The project budget is $10,000.00, including all taxes, fees, and delivery. Artists will be selected based on quality of past artwork, description of fabrication methods, materials to be used, and artist experience. Submission deadline: October 24, 2016. Artwork completion and installation is scheduled for July 2017, with dedication on September 11, 2017.
