About This Call

The City of Pompano Beach's Fire Department has acquired a piece of steel from the World Trade Center for use in a memorial for the 343 first responders that died saving lives on September 11, 2001. The City will commission an artist to integrate the piece of steel into an artistic memorial.

The artifact itself must be displayed as part of a greater memorial and not as a trophy item. Visitors must be able to touch the exposed steel and connect with the tragic loss of that terrible day. The numbers "343", representing the 343 first responding firefighters that died that day saving the lives of others, must be placed somewhere on the memorial. Listing the names of the first responders and their battalion are highly encouraged but are not required. If the artifact is cut, drilled or altered in a way that removes any portion of the artifact, the shavings or detached portion(s) must be returned to the 9-11 Foundation or proof of their respectful and permanent disposal must be provided.

The memorial will be placed in Founders Park located at 215 NE 4th Avenue, Pompano Beach, Florida, next to the Historic Fire House. The artifact is square in shape and measures 14 inches by 12 inches 7 centimeters and is 1 inch deep. In the middle of the artifact the steel projects and measures 2 inches deep. It weighs around 50 pounds. The budget for this project is $20,000.00. It shall be the artist's responsibility, where applicable, to obtain all necessary permits prior to fabrication and installation. The artist will ensure that the design will be code compliant and can stand up to South Florida weather conditions and wind load requirements. Applicants may submit 4-8 work samples.
