About This Call

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts seeks submissions for the 7th Biennial Salmon Sculpture Competition in Memory of Pam Salmon, a juried exhibition of outdoor sculpture. Up to 12 large-scale works will be chosen for installation at the Sunken Garden Park (South Abe Street between the Concho River and Avenue D) in San Angelo, Texas. The exhibition juror is Emily Wilkinson, Director for Public Art, Texas Tech University System.

Open to all artists 18 and older. Artwork must have been completed within the last 5 years and be suitable for long-term outdoor installation and appropriate for audiences of all ages. Large-scale works are required: at least 4 feet tall (excluding the base) with dimensions totaling at least 9 feet (L + W + H). All media suitable for outdoor exposure will be considered. Artwork will not be considered if materials cannot withstand long-term outdoor display, if size requirements are not met, or if content is inappropriate for children. Artists must provide hardware and tools for safe installation and make artwork available for exhibition from October 15, 2021 through August 1, 2023.

Entry fee is $20 per artist (non-refundable). Cash awards: First Prize $2,000, Second Prize $1,500, Third Prize $1,000. Artists are responsible for transporting and installing their work; a crane and forklift will be available. A one-time payment of up to $1,000 (depending on distance) will be awarded to help defray transportation costs. Artists are responsible for insurance during transit; SAMFA will insure sculptures while installed. Selected artists must sign a loan agreement and artwork should be available for sale, with SAMFA retaining a 20% commission on sales. Submit up to 3 sculptures with 3 digital images per artwork in high-resolution JPEG format (at least 300 dpi), plus up to one audio file and/or one video file. Important dates: August 13, 2021 application deadline; August 23, 2021 notification; October 15, 2021 exhibition opening and Sculpture Symposium at Angelo State University (1:30–4:30 pm); August 2-13, 2023 artwork pickup.
