About This Call

The City of Denton, Texas seeks exceptional, established public artists working in a variety of visual media for its 2-year Pre-Qualified National Artist List. Selected artists or artist teams may be contracted to design and fabricate artwork for Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) and other public art projects throughout the City of Denton. The City's $98 million Capital Improvement Plan extends to 2022 and includes public art implementation in projects involving Streets & Transportation, Parks and Recreation, and Public Safety Facilities. The Public Art Committee also makes recommendations for an additional annual public art budget of approximately $75,000 from Hotel Occupancy Tax funds.

Past public art acquisitions include sculptures, metalwork, murals, paintings, prints, photography, ceramics, fiber, architectural, and glass art. The Pre-Qualified National Artist List provides a streamlined application and selection process for artists interested in public art commissions. Once approved, artists remain eligible for contract opportunities for a two-year period. The artist list will be made available to the public, private developers, and independent art commissioning entities. The Denton Public Arts Committee anticipates approximately 5-7 new public art projects to be initiated each year.

Eligibility: Professional visual artists or artist teams at least 18 years of age living in the United States. Applicants should have demonstrated success working with budgets of $50,000 or less, materials suitable for indoor or outdoor public settings, site-specific design, public entities, and community collaboration. Application requirements include a 4-page maximum resume, 10 work images with accompanying list, primary and secondary art types, a 600-word maximum letter of interest, and 3 references. The selection panel will evaluate applications based on artistic merit and technical expertise (50 points), demonstrated ability to execute innovative public art projects (20 points), ability to execute projects on time and within budget (15 points), and expressed interest in creating public artwork (15 points). Artists scoring at or above 80 points will be recommended for inclusion on the list. Application deadline: January 26, 2020.
