50 To Watch 2020

50 To Watch 2020 is a regional exhibition highlighting San Diego's best visual artists, running September 5–27, 2020, produced by The Studio Door. This is the third edition of this biennial event. In addition to the exhibition, a high-end artist catalog will be produced, printed and mailed to over 1,000 galleries around the country.

Artists in San Diego County may submit 5–10 pieces representing their body of work for a $25 entry fee. If selected, juried artists will be required to share in the production costs of the publication with an additional payment of $350 per artist. Fifty juried artists will be selected. One artwork per selected artist will be exhibited at The Studio Door gallery (jointly decided between gallery and artist). Two works selected from entries will be featured in the national publication along with a short artist statement and contact information. Each featured artist will receive one hard copy of the publication.

Accepted categories include painting, drawing, photo, printmaking, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, artist book, ceramics, stained glass, and sculpture. Jewelry and performance art are not accepted. Video, film, installation, and works requiring external electrical source require gallery approval. Two-dimensional work maximum size is 8 feet height by 4 feet width (including frame). Three-dimensional work must fit through an average doorway and not exceed 8 feet in height. Two-dimensional artwork must arrive gallery ready, professionally presented, preferably in black or natural wood frames with no color mats, and with plexi only (no glass).

Award prizes for top 3 juried works: First Prize $300 plus no cost to be in publication ($650 value); Second Prize $100 plus no cost to be in publication ($450 value); Third Prize no cash but no cost to be in publication ($350 savings). Awards will be announced at the public reception on Saturday, September 5, 2020, 6 PM–9 PM. Artists will be notified by July 25, 2020. Selected artists must submit high resolution artwork images and make inclusion payments no later than August 8, 2020. Hand-delivery of artwork is available Saturday, August 30, noon–7 PM at The Studio Door (3867 Fourth Avenue, Hillcrest). Artwork pickup is available Tuesday, September 30. For artwork exhibited and sold in the gallery, 60% of the sale goes to the artist and 40% to The Studio Door. The Studio Door reserves the right to photograph selected works and use images for marketing and publicity without compensation.
