About This Call

50 TO WATCH is a regional exhibition highlighting San Diego's best visual artists, running from March 2-25, 2018, produced by The Studio Door. This is the third program, now a biennial event. The exhibition will be held in two galleries: The Studio Door and Escondido Arts Partnership. In addition to the exhibition, a high-end artist catalog will be produced, printed and mailed to 1,000+ galleries around the country.

Artists in San Diego County may submit 5-10 pieces representing their body of work for a $25 entry fee. Accepted categories include painting, drawing, photo, printmaking, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, artist book, ceramics, stained glass, and sculpture. The exhibition does not accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, installation, or works requiring an external electrical source. Artwork must be original work and gallery-ready. 2-Dimensional work maximum: 8 feet height, 4 feet width including frame. 3-Dimensional work must fit a pedestal sized 18 inches x 18 inches or take up no more than 4 feet of gallery floor space. Framed artwork must use black wood or natural wood frame with plexi only (no glass or color mats).

50 juried artists will be selected. One work will be exhibited at one of the two galleries; two works, a short statement, and contact information will be featured in the national publication and online. Award prizes for top 3 juried works: First Prize $300 plus no publication cost ($650 value); Second Prize $100 plus no publication cost ($450 value); Third Prize no cash but no publication cost ($350 savings). Selected artists must share in publication production costs of $375 total per artist (the $25 entry fee applies toward this cost). Each juried artist receives one hard copy of the publication and a discount on additional copies. Artists receive 60% of sales; The Studio Door receives 40%. Notification to artists by February 6, 2018. Hand-delivery of artwork: February 25 (Noon-4 PM) or February 27 (gallery hours). Artwork pickup: March 27. Juror: Maria Mingalone, Executive Director at Oceanside Museum of Art.
