About This Call
The Denver Arts & Venues Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create an original work of art for the 47th and York Bike Pedestrian Bridge, located over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks at 47th Avenue and York Street. The commission amount is $65,000 USD.
The bridge will serve as a critical mobility improvement for the Elyria and Swansea neighborhoods, improving safe bicycle and pedestrian connections between the neighborhoods and connecting Swansea Elementary School to the Valdez-Perry Branch Library. The selection panel has recommended an integrated project along the ramps and covered portion of the bridge. Artworks should be pedestrian-scaled and enhance the experience of bridge users. The panel is looking for artwork that highlights the diverse community, demonstrates connection to the community, and adds a sense of whimsy or moments of surprise. Works utilizing light, sound, or mixed-media are encouraged. All artworks must be suitable for outdoor display and fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials that can withstand weather, physical stresses, and potential vandalism.
Eligibility is open to artists or artist teams currently living and working in the United States. Emerging artists, Colorado-based artists, and artists working in media suitable for outdoor display are especially encouraged to apply. Teams may apply with one résumé per team member. Applicants must submit six digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. The selection panel will choose three to five finalists who will create site-specific proposals and participate in interviews. Finalists will receive an honorarium for this work and will be required to submit a Diversity & Inclusiveness Form. The selected artist or team will collaborate with Public Art Program staff and the design team to finalize designs for installation. The $65,000 budget is inclusive of all project costs including design fees, consultation, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and prevailing wage requirements.
