44th International Watermedia Exhibition

The 44th International Watermedia Exhibition is an international juried exhibition open to artists 18 years of age or older. Up to three entries per artist are permitted. The exhibition will be conducted in two phases: Phase I involves online selection of approximately 100 paintings by juror Keiko Tanabe, with the online exhibition opening March 7, 2021 and concluding April 1, 2021. Phase II involves verification of award-winning works, with selected artists asked to ship framed paintings to the WAS-H Gallery in Houston for screening and potential special gallery exhibition if COVID regulations permit.

Entry fees are $40 for the first piece and $15 for each additional entry. Artwork must be completed within the last 24 months and consist of at least 80% water-soluble media (watercolor, acrylic, gouache, egg tempera, casein, or ink). Minimum size is 123 square inches with no side less than 9.25 inches; maximum size is 48 inches in any direction including frame. Acceptable surfaces include paper, Yupo, Claybord, Aquabord, or Gessobord. Canvas is not accepted. Artwork must be original and not derived from published references, digitally created, or previously accepted in WAS-H exhibitions.

More than $7,000 in prizes are available, including cash awards: 1st Place-$2,000, 2nd Place-$1,200, 3rd Place-$1,100, plus special awards and merit awards of $175 each. Only one award per artist. Winners are notified by phone and/or email on March 6, 2021. An online catalogue will be available during the exhibition period on the WAS-H website.
