About This Call

The 43rd International Watermedia Exhibition is an international juried exhibition open to artists 18 years of age or older. Artists may submit up to three entries. Entry fees are $35 per entry, or 2 for $50, or 3 for $65. A $5 discount code (IWE2020) is available for the third image submission.

Artwork must be created with water-soluble media (at least 80% water media including watercolor, acrylic, gouache, egg tempera, casein, or ink). Artwork must measure a minimum of 123 square inches or 793.54 square centimeters inside the mat window, with a minimum of 9.25 inches on any side, and a maximum of 48 inches in any direction including frame. Acceptable surfaces include paper, Yupo, Claybord, Aquabord, Gessobord, or paper-based board; canvas is not accepted. Artwork must be completed within the last 24 months, framed and matted with white mat and liner, and protected by Plexiglas. Photo references are allowed if they are the artist's original source material; digitally created images, works painted from others' paintings, works painted under supervision or from teaching materials, and previously exhibited works are not accepted. Collage is allowed if water media is the dominant element. Enhancement media (less than 20%) may include watercolor pencils, pastels, charcoal, graphite, and metallic water-based paints.

The exhibition runs March 8 – April 2, 2020. Juror Eric Wiegardt, AWS-DF, NWS, will select and judge entries. Awards total more than $7,000, including 1st Place ($2,000), 2nd Place ($1,200), 3rd Place ($1,100), Odette Rubin Memorial ($1,000), Board of Directors ($500), Jack Bowen Award ($500), five Merit Awards ($175 each), and five Honorable Mention Awards. Winners will be notified by phone and/or email on March 7, 2020. A $50 handling fee is required for shipped entries or $25 for hand-delivered entries. All accepted entries must be delivered by 3:00 p.m. on March 5, 2020.
