About This Call
The Center for American Marine Art invites submissions for the 42nd Schaefer International Marine Art Exhibition. This exhibition gathers and recognizes important new contributions to the field of contemporary marine art from around the world, stimulates discussion of aesthetic and scholarly standards among marine artists and connoisseurs, and supports the Center's mission.
Eligible works include paintings, drawings, sculpture, or scratch-built ship models whose theme relates to past or contemporary maritime experience. Subject matter may include ships, yachts, coastal waterways, marshes and beaches, marine wildlife in their natural habitat, and working boats and people whose lives depend on the sea. Up to four works may be submitted. The selection committee encourages multiple submissions to better evaluate emerging artists' work and plan a cohesive show.
Submission requirements include a brief artist biography in essay format, a written description of each work (not exceeding 150 words), and high-quality JPEG images (minimum 1500 pixels on longest edge, maximum 30 MB file size). For sculpture, two images of each work are required. Entry fees are $45.00 for the first entry and $15 each for up to three additional entries. The entry deadline is August 1, 2025. Accepted works remain on consignment with the Center for sale at the retail price listed, with a 50% commission. The Center will insure artwork for 50% of retail value from delivery until return or sale. Works must be professionally framed and wired for hanging, with museum quality or acid-free materials required. Paintings and 2D works must be shipped in reusable AirFloat, MasterPak, or Uline boxes. Artists may arrange in-person drop-off and pick-up. For questions, contact Nicholas Raposo at [email protected].
