About This Call

The Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC), a nonprofit community art center serving the Detroit region, has hosted the Michigan Fine Arts Competition annually since 1982. Every year, more than 500 artists from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin enter the competition. The MFAC is juried by artist(s) or curator(s) of distinction, who select current works of the highest quality. Cash awards support working artists while recognizing their contributions to the cultural fabric of the region.

Participation is open to all artists 18 and older living and working in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Original works in all media (except video or canvas/gallery-wrapped copies) created and/or finished after January 1, 2020 will be accepted, provided they have not been previously exhibited at the BBAC. Artists may submit up to two entries for a $40 nonrefundable fee (covers one or both entries). One image is permitted per submitted work. Images of 3D work must include all components intended for display. Artists should provide specific details about their artwork's materials and techniques.

The application deadline is May 11, 2021. Juror results will be posted on the BBAC website by May 25, 2021. Accepted artwork intake is June 7-11, 2021 (10 am-4 pm). The exhibition opens June 18, 2021 and closes August 19, 2021 at 5 pm. Artwork outtake is August 20-21, 2021 (10 am-4 pm). All accepted work must remain on display for the full exhibition period and cannot be withdrawn early. The BBAC retains a 45% commission on all sales made during the exhibition. Work available for sale must be priced at $25,000 or less unless the artist provides an insurance rider for the additional amount. The BBAC reserves the right to photograph exhibited work and use these photographs or entry images for publicity, promotion, education, and grant proposals.
