40 Under 40

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences invites applications to "40 Under 40", a juried competition and exhibition for emerging and early career artists ages 18 to 40 (born after January 1, 1985). The exhibition will showcase original works created within the last two years that have not been previously shown at LBIF.

Eligible mediums include drawing, painting, hand-pulled prints, photography, mixed media, wall-hung 2D materials in the crafts (clay, glass, metal, fibers, wood), video, and computer-generated digital work displayed as prints. Two-dimensional works should not exceed 60 inches in width and 60 inches in height, and not exceed 10 lbs. Work may not project in the third dimension beyond 18 inches. All artwork must be for sale and suitably framed, firmly wired, and professionally presented. Frames must be black, white, or natural wood. Paper and fragile materials must be displayed framed and protected under acrylic (Plexiglas); no glass. Work with a retail value over $7,500 should not be submitted.

Entry fee is $35.00 for up to 4 entries (non-refundable). Submissions must include 1-4 images in JPEG format (1200 pixels or greater on the longest side, under 5 MB) and a 1-2 page document containing an artist statement, bio, and professional resume as a PDF or Word document, listing the artist's year of birth. The juror is Jennie Goldstein, Jennifer Rubio Associate Curator of the Collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Awards include $500 first prize, $250 second prize, $100 third prize, and three honorable mentions. Exhibition dates are July 19 - August 10, 2025. Accepted entries will be notified by email by June 6, 2025. Work must be received by July 10, 2025. The LBIF will retain a 40% commission on all works sold during the exhibition. Works will be insured for 60% of the artist's stated retail value during the exhibition.
