About This Call
Soldotna's third annual Memorial Day Emerging Artists Festival and Competition is open to all Alaska artists working in any 2D media. The competition awards three cash prizes: $1,000 for first place, $300 for second place, and $150 for third place. All judging is based upon the quality of the overall body of work submitted to the jury. Professional curation is provided by university art instructors.
This statewide competition is intended to encourage new and emerging artists and is limited to emerging artists in Alaska who have had not more than one major solo exhibit in a generally recognized gallery or regional art center. Not more than fifteen emerging artists will be selected for the curated 2017 exhibit. The outdoor exhibit will be housed within protective enclosures on the level park above the Kenai River. Selected artists must deliver and hang work between 9am and 11am on the day of the exhibit. The exhibit will run from 12 noon to 7pm on Saturday, May 27, 2017, and will include live music and refreshments. All work must be removed by 8pm Saturday evening. There is no application fee and no admission fee for viewers.
Eligibility is open to any Alaska resident of any age working in any 2D art forms, including painting, photography, drawing, collage, and fabric. Submissions must include not less than 7 nor more than 15 proposed works, with a maximum of two body of work submissions allowed per artist. All works must be ready to hang/exhibit. Any work deemed inappropriate for families with small children or otherwise offensive will not be hung. No alcohol or intoxicating substances are allowed at the event.
