About This Call

The Seattle Art Museum is accepting entries for the 36th Annual Betty Bowen Award, open to visual artists working in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. The award winner receives a cash prize up to $15,000, and selected works will be exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum. Two Special Recognition awards of $2,500 each may also be granted at the committee's discretion.

Betty Bowen (1918–1977) was a Washington native and enthusiastic supporter of Northwest artists. Her friends established this annual award to honor her legacy and continue her efforts to provide financial support to regional artists. Since 1977, the Seattle Art Museum has administered the yearly grant application process.

Applicants must submit a resume, artist statement, and six images of their work online by 11:00 PM PST on August 1, 2014. Each image submission should include the title, date, medium, dimensions, and a brief description. Artists working in film or video must upload six film stills and mail a disc with QuickTime files of the complete work(s) to: Betty Bowen Award/Call for Entry, c/o Modern and Contemporary Art Dept., Seattle Art Museum, 1300 1st Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101. The entry fee is $10.00.

The selection process begins with five finalists chosen from approximately 500 entries. Finalists are invited to present their work to the committee individually on September 5, 2014 in Seattle. The committee then selects one award winner and any Special Recognition Award winners based on the quality of work submitted, the artist's creativity and skill, commitment to developing their work, the potential impact of the award, and the artist's career development.
