About This Call

The 360 XOCHI QUETZAL Artist and Writer's Residency Program is located in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico on the shores of the largest lake in the country. The program offers 5 live/work spaces with free housing and a generous food allowance to support artists, writers, and musicians who would benefit from uninterrupted time to devote to their creativity. Chapala is located 25 minutes from Guadalajara International Airport and 45 minutes from Guadalajara, one of the largest cities in Mexico with abundant cultural resources including museums, galleries, and theatres.

National and international visual artists, photographers, writers, playwrights, new media makers, and musicians over the age of 23 are welcome to apply. Selection is based on demonstrated artistic accomplishment, a well-conceived residency project, evidence that the residency will make significant impact, and self-reliance required for a residency in the developing world. One live/work space is earmarked for a writer and one for an emerging artist. Two-person collaborative teams are also encouraged to apply. The Winter 2016 residency runs December 14, 2016 - January 13, 2017. Application deadline is August 7, 2016 at midnight Mountain Time. The application fee is $39.00 (Early Bird Discount of $9.00 available until July 1, 2016). Applicants will be notified no later than September 18, 2016.

The residency provides free wi-fi, all utilities, laundry, and weekly maid service. Each resident receives a $1,000 peso food stipend. Studio space includes large work tables, generous wall space, desks, professional easels for painters, a Cress sample kiln for ceramic artists (fires to cone 6), and a 33" floor loom for weavers. The main residency space is a hacienda-style home with individual bedrooms/work spaces and shared living/dining areas. All live/work spaces are walking distance to a park with running track, pool, tennis courts, and walking trails, and 5 minutes from the malecon lakeside promenade. Chapala has dozens of cafes, galleries, and hundreds of artists. Applications must be submitted through the CAFE website with required work samples (3 images for visual artists, 1-2 videos for musicians, 5-page double-spaced writing sample for writers, 10-page double-spaced sample for playwrights, 5-page single-spaced sample for poets).
