About This Call

360 Xochi Quetzal offers a free one-month artist residency in Chapala, Mexico. The residency includes housing with a studio, wi-fi, local phone service, weekly maid service, and all utilities. Artists are responsible for food, laundry, entertainment, transportation, and international calls. The studio features a large work table, a 16 ft long x 8 ft high work wall, 10' ceilings, desk, comfortable chair, and printer. The residence includes a kitchen and living room downstairs, bedroom and spacious studio upstairs, and 2.5 bathrooms.

Chapala is located 25 minutes from Guadalajara International Airport and offers access to a park with running track, pool, tennis courts, and walking trails. The malecon, a park-like promenade along the lake, is 5 minutes away. The area has sunny weather 300 days a year with temperatures averaging in the 70s. Chapala and nearby Ajijic have dozens of cafes, galleries, art openings, and hundreds of artists. Food is inexpensive, with meals available for $3-10 at restaurants. The residency dates are December 20, 2012 through January 20, 2013, with some flexibility, and the next residency is scheduled for April/May 2013.

Eligibility: National and international artists, writers, and new media creatives over age 25 are welcome to apply. Selection is based on demonstrated artistic accomplishment, a well-conceived residency project, evidence that the residency will make significant impact, and self-reliance required for residency in the developing world. The application fee is $36.00 US, with discounts available for members of certain artist organizations. Spouses or significant others may join; children, guests, and pets are not permitted. Smoking and firearms are prohibited. Applications are accepted through November 17, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Applicants will be notified by December 1, 2012.
