About This Call
The East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center invites artists residing in the State of Hawaiʻi to submit work for 36 Views of Mauna Loa, an exhibition exploring the cultural, ecological, and emotional significance of Mauna Loa. The exhibition will run in two installments between April and August 2026, featuring 36 artists total—18 invited and 18 selected from this open call.
Inspired by Hokusai's 36 Views of Mount Fuji, this exhibition goes beyond visual imagery to explore the powerful meanings Mauna Loa embodies as a symbol of destruction and renewal, tradition and change. Artists are invited to interpret these themes through painting, sculpture, video, photography, installation, and other mediums. The exhibition fosters conversation around the volcano as a metaphor for resilience, ecological balance, identity, and the connection between land and community.
Eligibility is open to artists living in the State of Hawaii. Each artist may submit one artwork or a cohesive body of work considered as a single artwork. Accepted artwork types include 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, photography, mixed media, and video. Digital submissions open January 1-31, 2026 through artcall.org. A panel of three jurors will select the 18 artists by February 15, 2026, with accepted artists notified by March 1, 2026. Part 1 opens April 3 with exhibition April 4-June 12, 2026. Part 2 opens June 19 with exhibition June 20-August 28, 2026. Artists must deliver accepted work one week before each opening (March 28 for Part 1, June 13 for Part 2). Artists from neighbor islands cover shipping costs to EHCC; return shipping is covered by EHCC. EHCC retains a 40% commission on sales, with artists receiving 60%. Submissions should include artwork images (JPEG, no larger than 10MB each), title, medium, year, price if for sale, artist statement (up to 1 page), and narrative biography (maximum 1 page). For submission guidelines and more information, visit ehcc.org/opencall/36views or contact [email protected].
