About This Call

The City of Napa seeks artists or artist teams to develop unique paving designs for six intersections in downtown Napa. Five four-way intersections (Type A) will feature artistic curb bulb-outs, and one three-way intersection (Type B) will feature an artistic design for Napa's first pedestrian scramble. This is a design-only opportunity. Artists should indicate in their letter of interest whether they wish to be considered for Type A, Type B, or both.

This RFQ is part of a multi-phase selection process. Finalists will be paid $1,000 to develop a preliminary conceptual design and respond to a Request for Proposal (RFP). Six finalists will be selected from the RFP process, with selected artists receiving a $4,000 artist fee. The City will manage fabrication and installation with a qualified third-party vendor.

Design constraints include: maximum six colors, solid colors only, pedestrian scramble designs must emphasize crosswalk areas and diagonal crossings, and artwork cannot contain text, copyright, logos, flags, brand or business names, addresses, or phone numbers. Artists must be available to participate in design, approval, and implementation as required. Artwork is subject to removal by the City at any time during or after installation.

Eligibility is open to US-based artists and graphic designers with previous professional experience in public commissions. Qualifying activities include education and training as an artist, exhibition records in museums or galleries, previous public or private commissions, artist-in-residency participation, or other activities indicative of a professional art practice. Complete submissions must include a letter of interest, 1-20 images with descriptions, image list with title, date, medium, and dimensions for each artwork, and a resume. Submission deadline: March 3, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Projected installation date: September-October 2025.
