About This Call
The 2nd Annual Salida Chalk Festival will transform downtown Salida into a giant outdoor gallery as artists create 6' x 6' temporary chalk and pastel artworks live during the festival. Following the Madonnari tradition of chalk painting, artists will create their works directly on the street. The festival is produced by Salida Arts and Culture and the Salida Creative District Program in partnership with the Salida Public Arts Commission. The Salida Creative District invites artists within a 150-mile radius to apply. The festival will be held Saturday, June 28, with artist workday from 9am-3pm. This year's theme is Celebrate Nature. Selected artists may begin layout on Friday afternoon prior.
Selected artists receive a set of 24 color pastels, an event "artist" t-shirt, breakfast and lunch, and a $250 stipend. Artists are selected based on: complete application; local artist within 150-mile radius; creative use of theme; sketch adheres to guidelines; and past work demonstrates ability to complete a 6' x 6' piece in one day. An awards ceremony and celebration will be held at 3:30pm on event day.
Applicants must submit a sketch or image of their proposed chalk drawing with a brief description, plus 2-3 images of prior artwork demonstrating relevant experience in large-scale work such as chalk art or murals. Selected artists must be at least 18 years old and are required to work on their chalk drawings on Saturday of the festival. Artwork must be produced as submitted or with written approval to change the design. No words, symbols, logos, or advertising are permitted within the chalk drawing (official sponsor logos only). Only non-oil-based soft chalk and pastels in solid form may be used; acrylic paints, spray can pastels, oil-based pastels, and hard pastels are not allowed. The square size is 6' x 6'. The festival will be held rain or shine. Deadline to enter is May 16, 2025. Jury results will be announced by May 19, 2025.
