About This Call
The Betty Bowen Memorial Award, established in 1977 and administered by the Seattle Art Museum, honors the legacy of Betty Bowen (1918–1977), a Washington native and supporter of Northwest artists. One artist is selected annually to receive an unrestricted cash award of $11,000 and an opportunity to display their work at SAM. PONCHO Special Recognition Awards are also granted at the discretion of the committee.
Eligible applicants are visual artists who live in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho. Applicants must submit a resume, artist statement, and six images with their online application. For each image, include title, date, medium, and dimensions. Artists working in film or video must upload six film stills and send a DVD or VHS of the complete work to the Seattle Art Museum, 1300 1st Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101. The application fee is $10.00. All applications must be completed and submitted online by midnight mountain time on August 17, 2007.
The jury process occurs in two parts. Six to ten finalists are selected from approximately 500 entries and will be contacted the week of September 17, 2007. Finalists will be invited to meet with the committee individually on September 26, 2007. The winner will be announced on October 25, 2007. Selection is based on the quality of work submitted, the creativity and skill of the artist, the artist's commitment to developing their work, and the impact the award will have on the artist.
