About This Call
The 22nd San Angelo National Ceramic Competition is open to all artists 18 or older who are residents of the United States, Canada, or Mexico. All work, both functional and sculptural, must have been completed within the last two years. Works previously accepted into this competition are ineligible. The entry fee is $20.00. Submit up to 3 entries with a maximum of 2 digital images per artwork in jpeg format at high resolution (at least 300 dpi). One video file per artwork can also be submitted in lieu of a second photo. Label images clearly with title and view designation. Any work that differs appreciably from the digital image will be rejected at the discretion of the juror.
The competition is sponsored by the San Angelo Museum Endowment for Ceramic Events, Darlene and John Williams, and Trinity Ceramic Supply Inc. The exhibition will be held at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, with Angelo State University working in close cooperation with the Museum. The Museum devotes its entire space to the show. In the last competition, 115 works were displayed. The juror is Peter Held, independent scholar and appraiser, retired curator of ceramics at Arizona State University Ceramics Research Center. The invited artist is Randy Brodnax from Elmer, Louisiana.
Awards include: First Place $2000, Second Place $1500, Third Place $1000, Fourth Place $500, Tile Prix Primo $750, and People's Choice $250. The Juror will award a special Tile Heritage Prix Primo prize to the tile maker whose work best reflects the ceramic traditions of America. Accepted work must be received by March 25, 2018, and must remain for the duration of the competition from April 20 to June 24, 2018. A complimentary catalog including a photograph of each exhibited work will be sent to all accepted artists after the close of the show. Sales will be encouraged with a 20% commission. The Museum will insure work while at the Museum; artists are responsible for insuring works in transit and return shipping costs. A panel discussion concerning contemporary ceramics will be held at Angelo State University on April 19 at 1:30 p.m., and the invited artist will lead a workshop on April 20. Numerous other events will occur April 19-23.
