About This Call
Art on the Streets celebrates the power of art in public places, turning the streets of Downtown Colorado Springs into a yearlong outdoor sculpture gallery. More than 200 artworks have been exhibited downtown since the program began in 1999, and the district is home to more than 50 permanent works, many of which have been purchased through Art on the Streets.
Up to 14 artists will be selected to exhibit. Selected artists each receive a $1,250 honorarium, plus two nights of complimentary lodging in Colorado Springs—one during installation and one for the Launch Party event. All selected artists are eligible for additional awards: $10,000 Juror Award, $2,500 Second Place, $1,000 Third Place, and $1,000 People's Choice Award. The exhibit opens June 14, 2018, with installation May 28-June 8, 2018, and closes May 2019.
Artists may submit up to 10 applications with 1-3 images per application. Entry fee is $25 for the first application and $10 for each additional application. Selected artists are chosen through a jury process prioritizing artistic quality, with secondary consideration given to installation, maintenance, safety, and diversity. All works are evaluated for stability by a structural engineer. Sculpture is encouraged, but other types of public art suitable for outdoor experience are welcome, including interactive and multimedia works. Artists should consider Colorado weather conditions (extreme sun, strong winds, freezing/moisture, temperature fluctuations) and that works will be accessible to the public 24/7 in an urban downtown environment. Larger, site-specific, interactive, temporary, or multimedia proposals are welcome. Two pieces will be selected for the Transit Gallery at the Downtown Transit Center, with special consideration given to works with interactive components.
