About This Call
Located on the South Rim of Grand Canyon in Arizona, the Astronomer in Residence program at Grand Canyon National Park offers astronomers and dark-sky advocates from diverse fields—including science, technology, and conservation—the opportunity to practice and share their discipline with park visitors under one of the most pristine night skies in the United States. Through educational outreach and creative connection, the program aims to inspire visitors to see the value of night skies, spread awareness about the threats of light pollution, and explore society's complex relationship with natural darkness.
In 2026, three astronomers will be selected to live and work on the South Rim for 4-8 weeks. Astronomers in Residence must deliver at least two public programs per week during their stay. Applicants may indicate preferred dates, though dates cannot be guaranteed. Residencies are not scheduled between December 16–January 31 or during the first few weeks of June due to the annual Star Party event. Applicants should be over 18 with a demonstrated history of working with dark skies and delivering public programs. Those who have already worked extensively in the park are not likely to be selected.
Provided resources include free private accommodations for the resident plus one guest (ADA housing available pending availability), a $500 weekly stipend, $250 travel stipend, up to $300 supply reimbursement, staff support, special access to park roads and trails, access to archives and park staff, and marketing exposure to approximately 850,000 online audience members. Opportunities to collaborate with Lowell Observatory, Grand Canyon School students, and Grand Canyon Conservancy members are available. Alumni are invited to participate in additional opportunities including alumni gatherings, proposal reviews, webinars, blog posts, and return visits.
Applications must be submitted by July 18, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Instead of an application fee, applicants are asked to make a donation of $1 or more to the program through Grand Canyon Conservancy, with proof of donation required by July 15, 2025. Proposals are reviewed by a peer panel of alumni and dark sky advocates. Selected applicants will be contacted with offers in Fall 2025. Priority is given to experienced scientists, researchers, and educators enthusiastic about public engagement; applicants knowledgeable about darkness and dark sky preservation; those with clear, creative, and impactful program proposals focused on dark skies; and experienced presenters who can communicate complex information to an international audience.
