About This Call
The Artist in Residence program at Grand Canyon National Park offers artists of any discipline the opportunity to work at one of the world's most beautiful sites. Through impactful community-engaged programming, the residency inspires visitors and locals to deepen their connection to Grand Canyon National Park. The program seeks inspiring and resourceful artists who engage contemporary, interactive, immersive, and/or socially engaged methods to make positive environmental and cultural impacts through their work. Priority areas of focus include climate resiliency, environmental sciences, natural and cultural histories, and historical interpretation and preservation.
Annually, three artists are selected to live and work on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for 3-10 weeks. Residents receive free private accommodations (ADA housing available upon request), a $750 stipend per week, $250 travel stipend, supply reimbursement up to $300, staff support, special access to park roads and trails, and access to archives and park staff including scientists and historians. Selected artists receive marketing exposure to approximately 850,000 online audience members plus PR opportunities in television, radio, and print. One artist or alumnus is selected annually for an exhibition at Northern Arizona University School of Art & Design's Beasley Gallery in Flagstaff. Alumni are invited to participate in additional opportunities including alumni gatherings, proposal reviews, webinars, blog posts, and local exhibitions.
Proposed projects must be interactive, immersive, or socially engaged and focus on Grand Canyon's environment, history, and/or culture. Projects must be family-friendly, accessible to global audiences, and follow Leave No Trace principles with no alteration or damage to the area. Artwork about Indigenous culture must be created or co-created by an Indigenous artist or organization. Solo artists or collaborative duos may apply. The application fee is $25 (Indigenous Tribal Members and Grand Canyon Community Members may apply for free). Applications close July 18, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Selected artists will be contacted with offers in Fall 2025.
