About This Call

The Demuth Museum is a nonprofit arts organization in Lancaster, Pennsylvania working to preserve Charles Demuth's (1883-1935) legacy, amplify contemporary artists' voices, and inspire creative exploration and expression. The Demuth Artist Residency program engages with an artist focused on drawing and/or painting to create a new body of work rooted in the Museum's collection and artistic community.

The residency is 6 weeks long, running June 29 - August 9, 2026. Selected artists receive a private 3rd floor studio located next to Charles Demuth's home and studio, access to the Museum's collection for private viewing and study, an honorarium of $1,500, housing reimbursement up to $3,300, and a $200 gift card to curio. Gallery & Creative Supply. The Museum will purchase a selected artwork for its collection. Artists must complete a public lecture on July 16, 2026, and hold an Open Studio public event August 6-8, 2026. Optional critique sessions with Lancaster-based artists and creative professionals are available upon request.

Applicants must be focused in drawing or painting (sculpture and installation are not accepted). No formal arts education is required, but a track record of professional activity is expected. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available. The application fee is $35 (may be waived for need-based applicants). Application deadline is March 23, 2026. Applicants must provide a letter of intent, resume/CV, two professional references, and 14-20 high-quality images of completed works. Notification of selection will be by April 17, 2026.
