About This Call
The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program at South Dakota State University School of Design invites visual artists working in any discipline, including interdisciplinary approaches, to apply for a 4-week residency from September 2–27, 2025. The program provides a $2,500 honorarium and $200 materials stipend.
During the residency, the selected artist will have 24/7 access to the Ritz Gallery, a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space on campus, and will be provided with a private, furnished, and equipped apartment within walking distance from the studio. A bike and lock will be provided for use during the stay. The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule with an open-door policy, holding a minimum of 8 open studio hours per week to share their project development with students, faculty, and the regional arts community. The artist will be required to give a public lecture on their artwork and may be asked to visit School of Design class critiques, engage with the South Dakota Art Museum, or participate in local interviews. The residency will culminate with an open studio event and/or exhibition in the Ritz Gallery. It is not intended that the selected artist teach or provide workshops.
Applicants should submit a residency project intent statement (one page limit), resume (not exceeding three pages), 3 professional references, and 10 images of completed artwork through www.callforentry.org. The application deadline is March 30, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. An $18 entry fee is required. The selection committee especially encourages applications from artists currently residing and working outside the South Dakota region. Artist responsibilities include transportation, shipping, materials, supplies, meals, and personal expenses.
