About This Call

Mother's Milk is an interdisciplinary residency program offering 2, 4, or 6-week sessions designed to support visual artists, sound artists/composers, dancer/choreographers, writers, and other creatives pursuing innovative work in their field. The program provides individuals or collaborative teams with time and space to pursue creative projects alongside other residents whose different perspectives, backgrounds, and interests offer inspiration and interaction. Work that is experimental in nature without regard to commercial viability is of special interest, with a focus on process over product. Residents have studios in a 1,500 sq. ft. hay barn studio and share housing in a fully renovated 1898 farmhouse.

Mother's Milk Residency is located on a restored former dairy farm at the edge of Newton, Kansas, on 15 acres heavily wooded in most areas with some historic farm machinery. The grounds offer opportunities for performances, installations (with prior approval), access to rusty and natural materials, or quiet spaces for reflection. Newton is a half-hour drive from Wichita and features antique stores, bakeries, and trains.

Applications are due February 10, 2025 for May 10 - October 24, 2025 residencies. Jury notification will be mid-March 2025. The $25 application fee is required. Each application requires a project proposal statement (not to exceed 500 words), current CV, work samples from the last two years, contact information for two professional references, preferred residency dates, and proof of English language skills for international applicants. Residents must be at least 21 years old, cannot be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, and must reside on-site for the duration of the residency. International applicants are responsible for acquiring appropriate visas if accepted. Residencies will be awarded based on excellence and merit of the project proposal and the applicant's ability to work independently.
