About This Call
Las Laguna Art Gallery invites artists to explore the notion of cultural and pop icons in this combined in-gallery and online exhibition. A cultural icon is an object made by a human being that is identified by members of a culture as representative of that culture, such as the national tree, flower, or pastime. Examples include the Statue of Liberty and eagle for America, red telephone booths for England, and the Eiffel Tower for France. Cities and regions are also identified by their icons, such as the Big Apple for New York or the Golden Gate Bridge for San Francisco. A pop icon is a celebrity, character, or object whose exposure in popular culture is regarded as a defining characteristic of a given society or era, such as Elvis Presley, Gandhi, Mozart, Einstein, Michael Jackson, Walt Disney, David Bowie, Prince, John Wayne, Bruce Lee, Elton John, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Bruce Springsteen. Pop icons are sometimes identified by a single image, such as Prince's symbol or Elton John's iconic glasses.
