About This Call
The City of Brighton invites artists to transform traffic signal boxes into public art installations across the community. Six traffic signal boxes have been strategically selected for this project. Selected artists or artist teams will receive a $500 honorarium for their design, and the artwork will be on display for up to 2 years with the artist's name featured on the box.
Designs must conform to the provided template (59"H x 148"W, four continuous panels) and encompass all four sides of the traffic boxes while accounting for edges, corners, handles, and other physical elements. Designs cannot include political or religious content, intellectual property breaches, trademarks, images of illegal activity, advertisements, logos, signage, promotion of any business or product, or object attachments. Designs must be family-friendly, unique to Brighton, and not defame or invade the rights of any person. Artists are encouraged to submit larger designs with vibrant colors for high visibility. Artwork can be created in any medium but must be provided as high-resolution digital files (PDF, TIFF, RAW, or Vector format preferred) at 200-300 dpi, with a small JPG or PNG for jurying. Artists may submit up to three designs.
Submissions will be divided into two categories: 18 and older (adult) and 17 and under (youth), with at least one traffic box exclusive to the youth category. City staff will review submissions for completeness and compliance. Designs will be selected based on artistic quality and vibrancy, appropriateness in scale and imagery, ability to translate to a three-dimensional surface, ability to relate to multiple viewer types, and uniqueness. Up to 15 pieces will be selected for public voting, which will take place for one week. Selected artists must provide artwork in the specified formats, sign a contract, and provide a W-9. The call is open to individual artists, artist teams, and community groups with a designated lead artist, including professional and non-professional artists, emerging artists, and students. All artists must reside in Colorado. City of Brighton employees are not eligible.
