About This Call

The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program at South Dakota State University's School of Design invites visual artists working in any discipline, including interdisciplinary approaches, to apply for a 4-week residency from September 3–28, 2024. The program provides a $2,500 honorarium and $200 materials stipend. Applications are open to international artists, with special encouragement for artists currently residing and working outside the South Dakota region.

During the residency, the selected artist will have 24/7 access to the Ritz Gallery, a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space on campus, and will be provided with a private, furnished, and equipped apartment within walking distance. A bike and lock will be provided for use during the stay. The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule with an open-door policy, holding a minimum of 8 open studio hours per week to share their project development with students, faculty, and the regional arts community. The artist will be required to give a public lecture on their artwork and serve as the keynote speaker for the 2024 South Dakota Art Education Association / South Dakota College Arts Conference on September 27th, receiving an additional stipend for this address. The residency will culminate with an open studio event and/or exhibition in the Ritz Gallery.

Applications must include a one-page residency project intent statement, resume (not exceeding three pages), 3 professional references, and 10 images of completed artwork in PDF format. An $18 entry fee is required. The artist is responsible for transportation, shipping, materials, supplies, meals, and personal expenses. Applications close April 14, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
