About This Call
Shenandoah National Park's Artist-in-Residence program offers professional artists an opportunity to live and work in this exceptional environment for three weeks. The works completed during the program will serve to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Shenandoah National Park. The program is supported by a generous donation from the Shenandoah National Park Trust.
Selected artists will receive uninterrupted time to pursue their own body of work and engage the public through outreach. A small stipend for travel, subsistence, and support for public programs will be provided. The artist will be housed in a furnished room at the Skyland Lodge in Shenandoah National Park. Residency dates available are: May 1-22, 2024; July 8-29, 2024; August 5-26, 2024; September 9-30, 2024; and October 3-24, 2024.
Requirements include presenting at least two public programs during the residency, donating an original piece of art representative of the artist's style and reflecting the residency within six months of the stay, and providing personal art supplies. A vehicle is required for the residency. Professional artists including writers, composers, craftsmen, painters, photographers, sculptors, storytellers, musicians, videographers, poets, and visual artists are encouraged to apply. To qualify as a professional artist, applicants must meet one of the following: earned a higher degree in a discipline relating to art, received recognition through peer review (juried shows, awards, competitions), published work, acceptance into other residency programs, participated in multiple gallery shows and exhibits, dedicate majority of time to advancing as an artist, derive majority of income from artwork, or be affiliated with a recognized professional art organization. Application requires responses to several questions, a resume, and images of work (up to 5 images, 4 audio files, or 3 video files). A letter of reference is optional. Entry fee is $5.00.
