About This Call
The 2024 New Mexico Arts Artist Residency at Lincoln Historic Site offers a six-week residency period in which selected artists reside and work in Lincoln, New Mexico. Artists will have access to and are encouraged to interact with the land, culture, and extensive local historic archival materials at the site, visitor center, and surrounding area. The residency culminates in the artist's research and development of new work that showcases ideas and work created during their six-week stay. Public engagement opportunities include, but are not limited to: an artist talk or exhibition, workshop, temporary site-specific installations, and performances. Artwork and community engagement should be safe and appropriate for both children and adults, ADA compliant, and should not permanently alter the environment when removed.
Lincoln is located on the traditional lands of Piro and Apache peoples, surrounded by landscapes of Pueblo, Apache, and Navajo communities. The village sits in the Bonito Valley between the Sacramento Mountains and the Capitan Mountains at an elevation of 5,696 feet, approximately 57 miles west of Roswell. Lincoln has been Federally designated as the Lincoln Historic District and as a New Mexico State Monument. The Lincoln Historic Site manages 17 structures and outbuildings, 7 of which are open year-round and 2 on a seasonal basis as museums. Most buildings are representative of Territorial Style adobe architecture from the 1870-80s.
Lodging will be provided at the Fresquez House, a single bedroom adobe dwelling constructed in 1887 and restored in 1982. The house is fully furnished with a modern kitchen, bathroom with standing shower, and laundry room/small workspace. Artists will be responsible for arranging their own transportation and food expenses. The nearest grocery store is in Ruidoso, 40 minutes away; nearest major airports are in Albuquerque, NM and El Paso, TX. Internet access is provided in the residence and main building. An all-inclusive stipend of $14,000 will be awarded in two payments: $7,000 upon receipt of signed contract and $7,000 upon completion of the public engagement activity. Artists must provide their own medical or workers' compensation insurance and will be required to enter into a professional services agreement with New Mexico Arts. Residency periods are February 23 – April 5, 2024 and April 26 – June 7, 2024. Submission deadline is December 1, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Work samples required: 1-10 images, 0-3 audio files, 0-3 video files (16 total maximum).
