2024 National Competition for Direct Carving

This is a national competition for women artists working in direct carving. Applicants must be 18 years or older and either a US citizen or permanent US resident. The entry fee is $75.

Submissions should include twenty images of direct carved sculptures (minimum ten different works) submitted through ShowSubmit.com, along with a maximum two-page artist resume, artist statement, and short biography. All work must be original with a minimum of 75% produced by direct carving. Image files must be high-quality JPEG format, at least 1500 pixels on the longest edge, and no larger than 30 MB. Images should show only the artwork itself without matting, frames, or background distractions.

The competition will be juried by three professional sculptor/carvers: Meredith Bergmann, Carol C. Griffin, and Maria Nevelson. The award of $5,000 will be given to a woman artist whose medium is direct carving, based on artistic excellence. One Honorable Mention Merit Certificate will also be awarded. The winner will be notified in February 2024 and posted on the NAWA website and social media pages. The application deadline is December 5, 2023.
