About This Call
The 2024 Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition will be held at Arts Barn and Kentlands Mansion Galleries, 311 and 320 Kent Square Road, Gaithersburg, Maryland, from October 11, 2024 to January 5, 2025. The exhibition is juried by Russell Jewell (AWS, NWS, TWSA, ED.D), an internationally recognized plein air painter with signature memberships in the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and The Transparent Watercolor Society of America.
Eligibility: All Baltimore Watercolor Society Signature and Life members may enter regardless of residence. Other artists must reside in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, or West Virginia. Artists must be 18 years or older. Art students enrolled in degree or certificate programs who are not BWS members may enter at a reduced rate. Entry fee is $45 for nonmembers, $30 for BWS members, and $20 for eligible art students. An optional $5 donation supports catalog production. Artists may submit one or two images; only one entry per artist may be selected for exhibition. Entries must be original watermedia paintings completed within the last five years and not previously exhibited in prior BWS Mid-Atlantic exhibitions. No class or workshop paintings, copies, or likenesses of other artists' work are permitted. Compositions based on photographs must use photos taken by the artist or set up and taken under the artist's sole direction. Works must be on natural or synthetic paper, paperboard, clayboard, or equivalent. Acrylic and acrylic mediums are permitted if applied in a fluid manner, not thick impasto. Collage elements are permitted if original work on watermedia paper. Minimum dimension visible within mat: 10 inches. Frame maximum: 48 inches in either height or width. All paintings must be framed in wood or metal with professional presentation.
Awards include Gold Medal ($1,500), Silver Medal ($1,200), and Bronze Medal ($1,000). Additional awards totaling more than $15,000 in cash, gift certificates, and merchandise are expected. Two special prizes will be awarded: an Artists' Choice prize based on online votes from BWS members and applicants, and an Easter Egg prize for the most popular hidden object in a painting. Selected entries will be notified by September 1. A reception and awards presentation is scheduled for November 10, 2024, 2pm-4pm. Russell Jewell will conduct a workshop in Columbia, Maryland, October 8-10, 2024. Paintings must be for sale with a 35% commission (30% gallery, 5% BWS). Artists are responsible for shipping costs and prepaid return shipping. A $25 handling fee applies for shipped paintings. Unsold artworks must be picked up January 6, 2025, 10am-noon or shipping arrangements made in advance.
