2024 Juried International Mokuhanga Exhibition

The Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference announces a call for entries for an exhibition of mokuhanga prints taking place April 4-8, 2024, at Imadate Art Hall, Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The exhibition focuses on Japanese traditional papermaking and the innovative use of washi by contemporary mokuhanga artists, highlighting new approaches to this historic art within the wider world of hand papermaking and contemporary art.

This exhibition is open to artists worldwide. Applicants may submit up to three water-based woodblock prints created within the last three years, printed on Japanese paper (washi). Mixed media, 3-D works, and Artist's Books are eligible if water-based woodcut is a major component. Maximum paper size is Masaban (55 x 44 centimeters / 21 x 17 inches). Entry fee is $35 USD via PayPal or credit card (nonrefundable). Submissions are screened by jpeg (maximum 2 MB). Selected artists will be notified by November 1, 2023, with accepted works due in Japan by January 20, 2024.

Judges include Nicholas Cladis, Keiko Hara, Allison Tolman, Annu Vertanen, and Katsutoshi Yuasa. Prizes include tools and materials from Michihamono, Holbein, Kobaien, Boku'undo, and Ozuwashi. Selected artists may pick up work at the conference, arrange return shipping for ¥2000 ($15 USD), or donate their print to the International Mokuhanga Association.
