About This Call

Artists are invited to research the history of the Surrealist movement and envision what Surrealism looks like in Hawaii today. Surrealism aims to revolutionize human experience by balancing a rational vision of life with the power of the subconscious and dreams. This exhibit honors the centennial anniversary of the Surrealist Manifesto and celebrates its influence in contemporary imagery.

The exhibition is open to Hawaii-based artists working in any media (2D, 3D, video, etc.) within the genre of surrealism, including traditional through contemporary, neo and pop surrealism. Artwork must have been created in the past two years and cannot have been previously exhibited at Wailoa Center. No reproductions or AI-generated or assisted art will be accepted. 2D works must be no larger than 7' tall x 9' wide; 3D works must not be taller than 10'. Artwork with sensitive subject matter (nudity, offensive religious or political statements, violence) may be juried out due to the State Parks facility. All accepted work must be gallery quality and installation ready.

Entry fee is $15 per submission with a maximum of five entries per artist. Hawaii Island students receive a free first entry with code 'HIStudent'. Submission deadline is September 6, 2024 at 5:00 PM HST. Artists will be notified September 9, 2024. Accepted artwork drop-off is September 28, 2024 (10:00am-1:00pm at Wailoa Center) or September 27, 2024 at 10:00am in Kona (artwork dimensions cannot exceed 40"x40" including packaging). The exhibition runs October 4-24, 2024, with an opening reception October 4, 5:00-7:00 PM. Artwork pick-up is October 25, 2024. Off-island artists must ship work by September 27, 2024 and are responsible for shipping costs plus a $10 handling fee and prepaid return label. All works must be for sale; 80% of sales goes to the artist and 20% to HIAA. Monetary prizes will be awarded. Contact: (808) 933-0416 or [email protected].
