About This Call
The City of Auburn is seeking artists and/or artist groups working in two-dimensional or small three-dimensional media to exhibit their work at City of Auburn gallery spaces during 2024. Artists working in diverse mediums are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to: printmaking, painting, drawing, mixed media, textiles, mosaic, glass, recycled materials, photography, calligraphy, collage, fiber art, ceramics, jewelry, and metal sculptures.
Two gallery spaces are available: Cheryl Sallee Gallery at the Auburn Senior Activity Center (808 Ninth St. SE) features a professionally equipped wall with Arakawa hanging system and gallery lighting, hosting 8-week exhibitions of approximately 5-12 artworks with hours 8am-5pm Monday-Friday plus various evenings and weekends. The Auburn Community & Event Center (910 Ninth Street SE) offers a spacious hallway gallery approximately 26 linear feet with professional Arakawa hanging system, gallery lighting, and pedestals/vitrines for small 3-D works, accommodating 4-20 artworks total with hours 8am-8pm Monday-Friday and 9am-4pm Saturday. Both are 8-week exhibitions.
Applications must include up to ten representative images (minimum 3), preferably work completed in the last two years, and an artist statement describing artistic process, inspirations, techniques, or subject matter. Applicants should indicate preferred exhibition months and gallery location preference. All work must be delivered and picked up in person in Auburn, Washington; artwork via post is not accepted. All work must be mounted or framed and securely wired (or with D-rings) and ready to hang. There are no location restrictions for artists. A selection panel including City of Auburn Arts Commissioners, artists, and community representatives will select exhibiting artists. The first available exhibition date is January 2024. Artists are required to sign an "Agreement to Exhibit" liability waiver. The exhibition spaces are not secured and there is no insurance for objects submitted. Artists may carry their own insurance. Artists are not allowed to list artworks for sale; any sales are handled privately between artist and buyer with no commission to the City. Exhibitions are publicized through city-generated press releases, social media, email blasts, and the city website. A reception can be scheduled based on artist interest and availability.
