About This Call
The Town of Carbondale Public Art Commission is seeking 15 outdoor street sculptures for the annual rotating "Art Around Town" show. One artist may secure the opportunity to display up to four original sculptures with a $1,000 honorarium per sculpture awarded. A $250 travel allowance for out-of-town artists will also be awarded.
This show is located in downtown Carbondale on Main Street and the Rio Grande Trail. Carbondale is located 30 miles from Aspen and is included in a Creative Arts District. The Public Art Commission assists in the marketing and sales of the sculptures. An Artist Reception and Community Art Walk takes place on June 6, 2024.
All sculptures will be placed on random sized blocks of Colorado Yule Marble with a custom steel plate adhered to the top. Sculptures must arrive with a steel plate attached to the bottom for tack welding to the marble base. A Public Works installation crew will assist with welding, lifting, equipment, labor and placement. Artists must be present for both installation (May 22 – June 5, 2024) and deinstallation (May 1 – May 15, 2025). The Town cannot receive sculpture shipments on behalf of artists.
Sculptures must be fabricated of highly durable, low maintenance materials that can withstand intense cold, snow, and heat. Sculptures will be located in high pedestrian and biking areas, so consideration must be made for height, shape and sharp objects protruding. Sculptures will not be allowed to be illuminated due to strict outdoor lighting codes. Sculptures will be on display for one year.
Applicants must submit up to eight digital images showing all angles of the sculpture and the base with steel plate. Installation information required includes: height, width at narrowest point of base, weight, base dimensions, detailed description of contact points with base, and a sketch of the base shape and dimensions. A brief artist statement may be submitted. Selected artists will be notified February 28, 2024, with contracts due March 17, 2024.
