About This Call

The City of Auburn invites sculptors to submit applications for the 2024-25 Downtown Sculpture Gallery. Selected works will be on loan to the City for twelve months (September 2024 – September 2025) and can be available for sale during that time. Each selected artist will receive a $1,000 stipend. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the selection committee may purchase one or more sculptures for inclusion in the City of Auburn's permanent collection from a $10,000 budget. A "People's Choice" vote will be held online and via printed ballots throughout the exhibition, with the winning sculptor receiving a $500 prize.

The gallery showcases 13+ sculptures throughout Auburn's historic downtown. Artwork must be durable, suitable for outdoors, and able to withstand the elements as well as interaction with pedestrians. Existing sculptures and artwork proposals are accepted. Artists must be living or working in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, and Montana) and are responsible for transporting and installing their artwork. The City will provide insurance during display, signage identifying the artwork, and promotional features on the City website and in a brochure.

Artwork specifications vary by pedestal location. Five pedestals on sidewalks require sculptures under 5,000 lbs with maximum widths of 3'8" from base to 7' height and 5' maximum width from 7' to 12' height. Other pedestals include raised planter boxes (3'x3' and 20'x5'), a flush 4'x4' concrete pad, and plaza locations with dimensions to be determined. Artists must provide detailed installation instructions and demonstrate the artwork will be sound, safe, and suitable for public display. Artists are responsible for repairs due to build quality during the exhibition. Applications must include artist's statement, resume/CV, up to ten digital images (one per sculpture), and artwork details. Application deadline: March 14, 2024 at 10:59 PM Pacific Time. Contact: Allison Hyde, Arts Program Supervisor, [email protected], 253-804-5043.
