About This Call
The Juried Visual Art Exhibition showcases exceptional new art by regional artists and is one of the pillars for the Festival's high-quality visual arts offerings. The exhibition will take place at SPACE Gallery, 812 Liberty Avenue in the Cultural District during the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 3–12, 2023, and extend through July 31, 2023. The exhibition theme is "Taking Up Space," which considers both physical and psychological actions of taking up space—including the use of scale, challenging or political works rooted in advocacy and social justice, and identity-based work. The exhibition welcomes thousands of visitors over ten days and is often reviewed by esteemed art critics. Artworks may be featured in Festival press coverage and purchased by attendees for personal and corporate collections. Select artists may be recruited to exhibit in solo and group shows through the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's gallery system and other galleries citywide. All accepted artists are invited to a private preview on June 2, 2023. Admission is free and open to the public.
Artists must reside within 150 miles of 812 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Each application should be for one piece of art, and artists may submit up to 3 applications. All work must be original, designed and created by the applicant, relate to the exhibition theme, not have been previously exhibited in Pittsburgh, and have been completed within the past two years. Video and sound components must be intended for gallery display; documented performances are ineligible. All work must be ready to hang, exhibit, or be installed during scheduled hours. Installation-based works must be installed by the artist and should take no longer than two 8-hour work days. Work must be available for display for the full duration of the Festival, June 3–12, 2023.
Awards include Best in Show ($2,500), Juror's Choice ($500, 4 total awards), Special Anonymous Award ($500), and People's Choice ($500). Artists will receive notification of application status in March. Selected artists must sign and return the exhibition agreement by April 20, 2023. All accepted artwork must be delivered in person and picked up at the gallery per the acceptance letter. Works selected for exhibition may be offered for sale at the artist's discretion; the Trust receives a 20% commission on all sales. Cancellations are discouraged and must be received in writing before March 31, 2023.
