About This Call
Small Town Big Art is seeking artists for public art projects in Maui County. This RFQ is open to international artists and welcomes all professional artists regardless of background or identity. Artists may apply as individuals or collaborative groups, with up to 5 applications allowed per person/group.
Applicants must submit 5-10 work samples, an artist bio and résumé, a statement of interest describing their design approach and experience with community engagement, a project description, and a detailed project budget. Projects must address the distinct sense of place, history, and/or culture of a Maui County neighborhood. Artists are encouraged to base proposals on a Hawaiian proverb from Mary Kawena Pūkuʻi's ʻŌlelo Noʻeau and to include opportunities for broad community engagement. Project budgets vary by category and must be submitted in $100 increments; multiple budget options may be submitted.
The selection process includes a 4-6 week call period, followed by 2-3 weeks of project development with the Small Town Big Art team to determine community involvement opportunities and confirm project details. Selected artists will then engage in a 2-12 week community engagement phase. The final artwork will be presented with an unveiling, performance, or blessing, and documented through a project web page and short documentary. Artists retain copyright ownership of their work, while the County retains ownership of video and photo documentation. Artists are responsible for providing all tools, equipment, technology, knowledge, and labor necessary to execute the project. Entry fee is $10.
