About This Call
Wailuku Town is undergoing road and infrastructure improvements including construction of a new four-level Wailuku Municipal Parking Structure, which will provide over 400 parking stalls and host events such as food-truck rallies, farmer's markets, and festivals. The structure will be bordered to the north by the future Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art, a Hawaiian cultural center.
Artists and artist teams are invited to develop site-specific public art for the parking structure's interior walls that will function as directional wayfinding signage. Five areas (I1-I5) are available for selection, with specific dimensions provided. A budget of approximately $75,000 is available to develop and formalize artwork designs, fabricate and transport the artwork, manage installation, and provide a detailed maintenance manual. The selection committee may select as many artists or artist groups as deemed fit. Artists must be able to communicate and collaborate with various stakeholders and develop work that serves as a visual landmark while promoting Wailuku's unique history and culture.
Selected artists will engage in a community consultations process to finalize designs and are encouraged to integrate the suggested theme of water's importance to Wailuku, including the water of Nā Wai 'Ehā and its life-giving role in the community. Artists and artist teams will be responsible for all costs incurred in preparing responses, providing all necessary tools, equipment, insurance, technology, knowledge and labor. The County of Maui will retain ownership of all video and photo documentation. Entry fee: $10. Submit 5-10 images of previous work.
